Waste Strategy 2007The Defra Waste Strategy was published on Thursday 24th May 2007.http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/strategy/ Although encouragement for weekly food waste collections is included, there are plans to introduce "pay as you throw" schemes (legislation will have to be amended first), to enable charging for visiting "tips" and generally measures to ensure waste minimisation. People cope with fortnightly collections by sharing neighbours' bins and by making frequent trips to the civic amenity sites. Without these options we fear a major increase in fly tipping and accumulations of waste in back gardens. Burning waste and fly tipping has been a real problem in Ireland and no doubt the same will happen here if "pay as you throw" is introduced. |
