You don't need weekly collections

For those people involved in this campaign to have weekly collections please read on:-

Fact: There is a need to recycle domestic and commercial waste
Fact: If you are recycling properly then you should be separating out paper, glass etc and compostibles.
Fact: If the this is done and the compostible matter is either composted at home or collected centrally for composting then all that is left in what used to be the main bin will be inert material which will not smell, attract flies or cause disease.

Hence this non recyclable bin only needs to be collected when full. As a resident within the Wyecycle scheme in Kent we have been doing this for years and our wheelie bin for non recyclables, collected every other week, is rarely full and never smells!

You don't need weekly collections

I also live in an area where we have alternate weekly bin collections. Having our general waste collected fortnightly does not cause any problem whatsoever. It also encourages people to recycle more.

Alternate collections are no problem to us

Just want to say we've had alternate week collections for ten years with no problems at all.

We opted for large bins rather than the small ones also on offer and we wrap all our waste carefully. We're not rabid recyclers but we take glass to the amenity tip, recycle newspapers and put vegetable waste on the compost heap.

If disposable nappies are used it's possible to buy a gadget that compresses the used nappies so that they take up less space, (you can buy these secondhand too) and disposable nappies these days come with their own plastic bags to cut out smells. However the best option is to choose washable nappies anyway, or biodegradable disposables. Check out any Real Nappy website for details.
