The past few days have been extremely hot and as many people will know, uncollected organic waste will rapidly break down causing odour, bacteria and fungal spores. Maggot infestations will also pose problems.
To help cope with the difficulties it is a good idea to keep your general waste bin in the shade if at all possible.
Double wrap any organic matter and try not to keep waste food on kitchen counters where flies can lay eggs prior to waste being taken to the bin.
After Day 5 it helps to use a spray disinfectant on bin contents. This will lessen the odours which are so attractive to flies. Continue on a daily/twice daily basis until Day 14 when the bin is collected.
If maggot infestation occurs, remove any bags of waste, turn the bin on its side and wash out well, preferably with a hose.
There is a suitable solution - local authorities should collect weekly throughout summer months!
